Developing group photos - what format to choose

Group photos have a charm of their own. They capture family gatherings, class reunions, company outings, and weddings, allowing everyone who matters to be seen in a single frame. The problem arises when we want to develop such a photo, because in a small format faces become unreadable and details disappear. Choosing the right print format really matters here, and it is worth giving it a moment's thought before placing an order.

Why a small format is not enough

A standard 10x15 cm print works perfectly for portraits and photos with one or two people. With a group of ten or fifteen, each face takes up only a few millimetres on such a print, making it hard to recognise anyone. This is frustrating, especially when the photo itself is technically very good. That is why with group photographs it is worth thinking about larger formats right away. Enlargements in 20x30 cm or 30x45 cm offer an entirely different viewing experience and let you enjoy every detail.

How to match the format to the number of people

For groups of up to five people, a 15x21 cm print is often sufficient. For larger groups, such as class photos or wedding shots, formats from 20x30 upward are worth considering. If the photo is going on a wall in the living room or office, even bigger formats are a good choice, where each person is clearly visible even from across the room. It is also important to check the file resolution before developing. A photo taken on a good-quality phone usually handles enlargement to 30x45 without any issues, but for even larger formats it is wise to make sure the file has enough pixels.

Paper and finish

For group photos that often end up in a frame, matte paper works well because it does not reflect light and allows comfortable viewing from any angle. Glossy paper, on the other hand, enhances colours and adds depth, which can be an advantage with bright, colourful shots from outdoor gatherings. Regardless of the choice, prints in the right format will change the way we look at group photographs.

A group photo developed in a large format is something that catches the eye and brings a smile every time you walk past it. Many of us keep such photos only in our phone gallery, yet on paper they gain an entirely new dimension. Next time you are planning to develop a keepsake shot with a group of loved ones, it is worth investing in a larger format and seeing what a difference it makes.
